Albert Haner

ID # 2095, (1820-1894)
BirthAlbert Haner was born on 24 August 1820 at Near St. Catharines.
MarriageHe married Charlotte Vrooman, daughter of Adam Vrooman and Elizabeth McCowan, on 28 March 1849 at Manchester, New York.
Our source for Albert and Charlotte's date and place of marriage is taken from Albert's biography in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Iowa, 1889, a transcription of which biography is provided by the Iowa GenWeb project.

There are problems with the marriage year 1849. It may be in error. The 1851 census at Moulton Township in Ontario shows daughter Jane's age as 4. If the census question was answered correctly, 'what is your age as of your next birthday', then, at best, Jane was born in 1848. The U.S. census Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa, reflects this, giving Jane's age as 12. Still, 1849 is the marriage year given in the biography and may even be correct, so it is shown here.

One other item of note: The place of marriage for Albert and Charlotte is shown in the Jackson County, Iowa, biographical album, as Manchester, New York. This is almost certainly the Manchester that was a village and incorporated into Niagara Falls, New York, in 1848. If Albert and Charlotte were indeed married in 1848 or earlier, then the biographical album should be correct.

DeathHe died on 11 November 1894 at age 74.
BurialHe was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Jackson County, Iowa.
NoteHe The 1851 census in Moulton Township, Haldimand County, spells the family name as Hayner. Other spellings include Hainer. The gravestone for Albert and Charlotte spells the name as Haner and that is used in this tree.

The 1889 Chapman biography of Albert Haner states that Albert's father was named Isaac and his grandfather Albert. It states that Albert served in the British Army during the Revolutionary War and later settled in Upper Canada and received 'several hundred acres' of land. Albert's family has not been researched in any detail for this tree.

It should be pointed out that the 1851 census at Moulton Township in Haldimand County in Ontario shows an Elizabeth Hayner, age 10, in the household. Since Charlotte is shown as age 22, we may reasonably say that Elizabeth is not Charlotte's daughter. Looking over other Hayner family members present in the census it is just possible that Elizabeth is Albert's sister. We do not find her later and so, for the moment, do not know her place in the family.

A website, iowagravestones.org, shows a photo of the gravestone of Albert and Charlotte.

Albert's inscription reads:

Albert Haner died Nov. 11, 1894, aged 72 ys, 2 m, 17 d.
