For the present we only have an index provided by FreeBMD for the marriage of Shadrack Church and Rose Gooding. They were married in the last quarter of 1859. The index provides the district town of Plomesgate. Kenton records have been found recorded under the district town of Plomesgate and this may be where Shadrack and Rose were married, but this is not certain. |

| Note | He Familysearch.org provides us with a baptism date of 26 March, 1837, at Kenton, Suffolk, for Shadrack Church. This is in index form and an image of the baptism record has not yet been shown. His parents are shown as William Church and Clementine Sheldrake. Our best information is that Shadrack and Rose were married in 1859. This may have been in Kenton, but for the moment we may say that they were married in Suffolk. Since the district town of registration was Plomesgate, a Kenton marriage is a possibility. Shadrack and Rose are present in Kenton at the time of the 1861 census. With them is son William, age 1. Clementine Church, widow, age 62, is in the next household. In this census, Shadrack's nickname is evidently used - Shedy. By the 1871 census in Saltfleet Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada, 'Shadrick' Church is present with his family and shown as farm labour. His age is given as 33. With him are: Rose 30, William 12, John 8, Samuel 6, and Frederick 3. In the 1881 census, the family is in Gosfield North Township (West part), Essex County. All children are shown as born in Canada. This is not correct. Present are: Shadrack Church 48, Rose 40, William 20, John 18, Samuel 14, Frederick 10, Mahaley 8, Franklin 7, Ann 4, Joseph 1/12. In 1891, the family is still in Gosfield North Township. Along with Shadrack and Rose, Samuel and Frederick are shown as being born in England. The rest of the children are shown as born in Ontario. There are no additions to the family. Mahaley is shown as Mahala. As this was apparently the given name of her maternal grandmother, this will be correct. At the time of the 1901 census, only Joseph is with his parents. 1870 is shown as the year of the family's arrival in Canada. Since they were present at Salfleet in 1871, this will either be correct, or close. In 1911, again, Joseph is present with his parents as well as a grandson whose name may be Glen, though looks rather more like 'Glenn'. The form shows the couple's immigration to Canada as 1848! This is nowhere near correct. In 1921, Shadrack and Rose and Joseph are still present together. A year of arrival in Canada is given, but it is not at all clearly readable. Death reg. 013137-27 Gosfield N., Essex Co. Chadrack Church died March 7, 1927. Place of death West pt. (Lot) 11, Con. 9. Widower. Born England Feb. 14, 1833. Age 94 yrs. 21 days. Gentleman. Resided place of death 30 years. In Ontario and in Canada 63 years. Parents William Church and Clementine Cheldrig, both born England. Informant Joseph Church, RR1, Cottam, son. Burial March 9, 1927, Cottam Cemetery. Shadrack's stone in Cottam Cemetery (see CanGenWeb) shows his name and dates as: Shedrack Church 1832 - 1927. (CanGenWeb has a brief writeup on Cottam Cemetery and it's interesting to read in terms of the four sections involved.) The Essex County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a transcription of Cottam Cemetery. This shows Shadrack's year of birth as it appears on his gravestone as 1852 and this is a mistranscription. The photograph of the stone as it appears on CanGenWeb makes it clear that his year of birth on the stone reads as 1832. Such indexing as is available gives no clear information as to the birth registrations of the children of Shadrack and Rose that were born in England. Only two Ontario birth registrations have been found - those of Franklin and Joseph. |
