Birth: At Bytown, on June 26, 1836, a son was born to the lady of Captain
Armstrong of the 66th Regiment.

As noted, June 26, 1836, is the same date of birth that appears on John's gravestone in St. Mark's Anglican Cemetery at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The baptism record is provided by Ancestry as found in Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1968, and reads as follows:

1836 Anglican Garrison, Quebec
Armstrong Privately Baptised
John Fellows son of Thomas George Armstrong Esq. & Captain in His Majesty's Sixty Sixth Regiment of Foot, and of Charlotte his wife was born on the twenty sixth day of June and privately baptised on the seventh day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty six. By me. J.S. Strong, acting chaplain to the forces
Present Major Duncan, Dr. Anglin.

See notes under John's father for the possibility that John Fellows Armstrong was baptised twice.

It is safe to say that John F. Armstrong, age 14, who appears in the 1851 census at St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. He is in a school residence and his place of birth is shown as Bytown (Ottawa), Canada. His mother and sister Charlotte Laura (shown as Laura, age 12) are also on St Helier, Jersey. See notes for mother Charlotte.

John Armstrong, age 26, Captain in the R.C.R. (Royal Canadian Rifles), appears in the 1861 census in Kingston in the home of K.M. Moffatt, Major in the R.C.R. The 1861 census was begun on August 14th of the year and the enumerator was supposed to ask the age question: What is your age as of your next birthday? This was not always adhered to, but this enumerator seems to have done things by the book. Since John Armstrong was born in June of 1836 (according to both his gravestone and his baptismal record), then the enumerator was essentially asking what John's age would have been as of his birthday in 1862. For this, age 26 would be correct.

Mitchell & Co's 1865 General Directory for the city of Kingston shows Armstrong, J.F., captain, Royal Canadian Rifles, h Barrie, nr Princess.

John Fellows Armstrong wrote a will. It appears on microfilm GS1 reel 456, Leeds & Grenville Surrogate Court. The grant number is 266. He signed this will on 9th January, 1866, in the town of Guelph in the presence of witnesses resident in Guelph, and his brother-in-law, Andrew Lemon, was his executor. At the time of writing his will he states that he is resident in Kingston, Canada West, and that he is lately a captain of the Royal Canadian Rifles.

Page 2 of his will tells us that he has married and that his wife's name is Amanda Melvina Armstrong. The will speaks of children in very general terms and it is by no means clear from the terminology that he and Amanda had any at the time the will was written. The associated probate papers, however, include an inventory of John's rather substantial estate and it mentions a payment to John's wife and children (plural), so we must believe that they did exist. See notes below.

John Fellows Armstrong died on 18th December, 1867, in Brockville, according to papers associated with the probate of his will, and he was buried in St. Mark's Anglican Cemetery at Niagara Town. St. Mark's Burial Book, page 23 (see MS545 reel 1) reads:

John Fellowes Armstrong, age 31, gentleman, of Brockville, buried Dec. 23rd, 1867, officiating minister William McMurray.

His gravestone reads:

Row 11, nbr. 3

Armstrong/In memory of/John Fellows Armstrong/Captain in Royal Canadian Rifles/born June 26, 1836/died December 18, 1867/Aged 31 years/verse

The transcription is provided by the Niagara Branch of the OGS in their publication 3357.

In 1882, John's sister Charlotte Laura Lemon was buried with him.
