     Clarissa S. Evans was born in September 1853 at Chatham, Kent County, Ontario.1 She was the daughter of Israel Evans and Minerva Jane Moe.1 She married Alexander Gordon Mess on 25 May 1869 at Chatham, Kent County, Ontario. (notes: From Kent County Marriage Register:
Mess Alexander Gordon, 35, Chatham, Scotland, s/o of George Mess and Sappena Robertson, married 25 May 1869 Clara Evans, 17, Chatham, Chatham, d/o Israel and Minerva.).1
Clarissa is shown as Clara in the 1881 census and said to be 28.
The Mess family is found at Chatham in the 1881 census. By the time of the 1900 census taken at Detroit, Clara, as she is called, is in Detroit with son Gordon. She is a widow. Neither Clara nor Gordon have been found in later censuses.1
