NoteHe John A. Cornell, in his work The First Church of Beverly, which was located at Sheffield, has much to say about the Presbyterian Church at Kirkwall. Here, as he states in the preface, he draws upon memories and records of Mr. Robert McQueen of Kirkwall, and much of what follows will no doubt be sourced to Mr. McQueen.

The arrival at Kirkwall of the first families from the Scottish Lowlands and border counties is dated to August of 1832. Among these families was that of John Frier. Another group arrived in 1833 and one of the families was that of John Fairgrieve.

Just who was John Fairgrieve in the scheme of the Frier-Fairgrieve extended family isn't certain, but the 1842 census of Beverly shows a Hugh Fairgreve being enumerated immediately after John Frier. The 1851 Beverly agricultural census shows John Frier on concession 6, lot 16, and on concession 7, lot 17. It states that he had 50 acres on each. This may or may not be the first generation John Frier. (The 1851 every person census for Beverly, for the most part, has not survived.)

A gravestone for John Frier does not appear in the transcription of Kirkwall Presbyterian Cemetery. It appears that he was dead prior to 1861- probably much earlier. His widow (she is described as the wife of John Frier), Isabella Fairgrieve Frier, is buried with her daughter Agnes and son-in-law John Paterson at Kirkwall.
