NoteShe We know that Jane's middle name was Maria from the will of William Buchanan, her husband. We also know that her maiden name was Griffith from the marriage registration of her daughter Lavinia Buchanan and Samuel Smith. There is some small evidence that her father may have been Enos Griffith of Dumfries Township, but this remains to be researched. What we do know is that Jane Maria Buchanan's mother was Sarah Rosebrugh. This information is provided by two sources. The first is Rosbrugh, A Tale of the Revolution, by Rev. John C. Clyde, 1880, and The Rosebrugh Family Story, by Harold Rosebrugh, Galt, 1965. Neither book favours us with the name of Sarah Rosebrugh's husband other than to say his last name was Griffin. These sources go on to say that their daughter Jane married William Buchanan. Griffin and Griffith seem to be used interchangably in background information for the family.

Several members of the Griffith family settled in Dumfries Township over the years. Names such as Doane Griffith may be found, as well as Eleazar, and Lazarus, and Enos in old Dumfries census and assessmets. (There are several spelling variations of the given name Doane, but Doane seems to be the intended form if not always the one used.)

It would make sense that Jane Maria's mother was Sarah if for no other reason than William and Jane Maria's first child was Sarah. (William's mother was Margaret.)

It should be noted that a Lavina Smith, age 72, was in the home of Smith Buchanan at the time of the 1891 census as well as a William Smith. This could be confusing, but the story would seem to be as follows.

A Lavina Smith appears in the 1851 census in South Dumfries with her husband Eli Smith. They have with them a daughter, Jane Smith, age 12.

The Waterloo County Marriage Register has the following:

McCrae, Peter, 25, S Dumfries, Shamen? Scotland, s/o William & Jane (McNeil), married 9 February 1858, Jane Smith, 18, S Dumfries, S Dumfries, d/o Eli (Smith) & Lavinia (Griffith).

It seems safe to say that Lavina, or Lavinia, Griffith was the sister of Jane Maria Griffith, wife of William Buchanan. Their daughter Lavena, variously spelled, was almost certainly named after her. Given that some of the Griffith family was born in Canada and some in the U.S., it is likely coincidental that Lavena, daughter of William and Jane Maria also married a Smith, Samuel, born in Wales. Just what Samuel was doing in Brant Township at the time he married Lavena isn't known.
Smith Buchanan, in the 1891 census, has with him William Smith. This William Smith is the son of Smith Buchanan's sister Lavinia. This is made clear William Smith's death notice in the Galt Reporter in 1935.
