A registration or date for the marriage of William Roelofson and Mary Fonger has not been found. We take our information from a Short History of the Roelofson Family as it appears on pages 27 to 29 in the 1947 booklet, A History of the People of Troy, compiled and edited by those interested in Historical Research of The Women's Institute of Troy, Ontario. This simply tells us that William Roelofson married Mary Fonger and that they took up land in Beverly Township on lot 3 in the 2nd concession.

DeathHe died on 22 February 1838 at age 51.
BurialHe was buried at Troy Cemetery, Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co..
NoteHe As mentioned in the marriage notes for William Roelofson and Mary Fonger, we have but the family history of the Roelofsons as it appears in the 1947 booklet A History of the People of Troy. This makes reference to William and Mary being established on lot three of the second concession of Beverly.

The Abstract Index for this lot shows William registering his purchase of the north half on 28 February, 1822. The date of the transaction has been left blank. The Roelofsons purchased this lot from Barney Markle, a well known figure in Beverly Township of the day. Markle had purchased the entire lot in 1816. Almost every other transaction on this page is a Roelofson transaction and there are a range of Roelofson given names as well as initials.

The entry immediately following the Markle-Roelofson transaction lists the will of William Roelofson. According to a transcription of William's gravestone in Troy Cemetery, he died on 22 February, 1838. The will entry as shown on the Abstract Index dates it to 4 January, 1838, and the registration date for the will when it was turned in to the Land Record Office is 2 March, 1838.

We will note here that wills weren't required to be probated prior to 1900. And while many were, in early days a will, which would typically pass a piece of land on from father to son, could be taken to the Land Record Office and registered there and become a sort of deed.

The will is probably recorded in a LRO copy book, or volume, or register, as they are variously called, and is probably on microfilm, but has not yet been sought. (Considering the names and listings of transactions for Roelofson names and for small portions of the lot, it would take obtaining a copy of the will to determine just how the property ownership was intended to work out.)

The gravestone for William and Mary in Troy Cemetery has been transcribed by the Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and reads as follows:

William Roelofson died Feb. 22 1838 aged 51 yrs 9 mos. & 12 dys
his wife Mary died Aug 3 1841 aged 54 yrs 9 mos & 19 dys.

William and Mary's dates of birth have been calculated from this. Chances are these calculations aren't entirely accurate.

Again, Mary's maiden is not mentioned.

Wellington Roelofson, in his family history, names the children of William Roelofson and Mary Fonger as:

John, Lawrence, Sarah, Elizabeth, Lydia, David, William, Barney, Sobrina.
