Elizabeth Leece

ID # 4272, (1802-1841)
FatherJohn Mattison Leece (-1847)
MotherMargaret (--?--) (1765-1835)
BirthElizabeth Leece was born on 17 January 1802 at New York State.
DeathShe died on 21 April 1841 at Dumfries Township, Gore District, at age 39.
MarriageShe married Alexander Buchanan, son of John Buchanan and Margaret McArthur.
A marriage year of 1820 for Alexander and Elizabeth is approximate, but will be close. According to the bible of Theron Buchanan, the first born of Alex and Elizabeth was John and he was born in August of 1821. Such information as is available to us suggests that Alexander arrived in Shades Mills by 1818 and no later than 1819. The Leece family was present in the township from very early days.

BurialShe was buried at First Church Cemetery, High Park, later Section 2, Mountview.
NoteShe Elizabeth was the daughter of John Mattison Leece and his wife Margaret. Elizabeth's date of birth is taken from the copy of a bible page belonging to Theron Buchanan. This page is kindly provided by a family member. This same page provides the date and place of birth for Alexander Buchanan, Elizabeth's husband.

With time and after Elizabeth's death, Alex Buchanan moved into Galt. As of the 1842 census, however, he was still in Dumfries Township, where Galt is also situated. It's reasonable to believe that Elizabeth died in the township.

The family attended First Church in Galt and it is believed that Elizabeth was buried in First Church Cemetery at High Park. Mountview Cemetery in Galt was not created until July of 1868. In the 1880s the High Park cemetery was in poor shape and so there was a 'dig'. The remains of persons and the gravestones were moved to Mountview. A new, tall, granite piller stone was made for the Buchanan family and Elizabeth's name and dates were inscribed thereon.

When Alex moved into Galt, he took up residence in a large stone house on The Crescent. The source for what follows is an undated newspaper clipping from, approximately, the 1950s, and it tells of Elizabeth's gravestone being found and used as a support for the back steps. Evidently, Alex had not wished to part with her gravestone and it probably sat in the basement until a later owner of the house used it for what was deemed to be a practical purpose at the time. It is understood that once found, the stone became the centre piece in a sunken garden at the house and the attractive garden was one of a number on a list for garden tours in the town. Your researcher has not seen this original stone.
