A note here with regard to marriages in the Sheffield area of Beverly Township.

The 1861 census, the earliest every-person census available to us shows Stephen and Mrs. Main as being of the United Brethren Church. The Culham family was of this church as well. Both families were there from early days.

John A. Cornell was the founder of the First Church of Beverly and no doubt married, baptized and buried numerous members of his congregation. No book of these records has survived, however. The church is presently of the United Church of Canada and they have nothing for the Sheffield church in their archives. A conversation with one church historian indicates that they present congregants are unaware of any surviving record book for the church. Either none were kept, or they are now lost.

Stephen Main died March 29, 1912. Age 81 yrs., 8 mos., 9 dys. Born Canada July 20, 1830. Place of death lot 6, concession 6, Beverly. Retired farmer. Married. Parents David Main and Polly Weaver, both born Pennsylvania. Physician A. B. Smillie, M.B.. Informant Mrs. Oscar Main, 326 Main St. West, Hamilton.

Stephen's date of birth as it appears on his death registration agrees with it as entered in the 1901 census. It also agrees with the inscription as it appears on Stephen and Rosetta's gravestone. They are buried with Rosetta's parents, Henry Culham and Desdemona Ann Munn.

Cornell's history of Beverly Township has it that Stephen's father, David Main, came from New Jersey. This is probably correct.
