The inscription on the family gravestone in section 1 of Mountview indicates that James' mother's surname was McLaughlin. 'McLadlaw' is how the name was written on the form by the county registrar.

The Dumfries Reformer of 19 September, 1860, tells us that James and Jane were married in Galt on 7 September, 1860. The groom is described as being of South Dumfries and the bride of North Dumfries. This extraction was provided by Rosemary Ambrose.
