William was not buried in Burns Cemetery. He is recorded as being buried in Alliston Union Cemetery at Alliston, Ontario. The gravestone has been transcribed by the Simcoe County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and reads: IMO / William V. Black / Died April 25, 1930, In His 86th Year / Native of Kincardineshire, Scotland At first glance, there is conflicting evidence relating to the burial of William's parents, William Black and Mary Cairns. According to notes made in or before 1909 by Andrew Hunter, the author of History of Simcoe County, William Black and Mary Cairns are buried in Burns Presbyterian Cemetery. A much later transcription places their burial in Alliston Union Cemetery. The story has since been explained to me by a correspondent who is a descendant of William and Mary. They were exhumed from Burns Cemetery and then reinterred in Alliston back in the 1920s, she believes. She tells that her father traveled to Alliston to attend the reburial. |
