NoteShe After the deaths of the Burrows parents in 1858, it is reasonable to conclude that the children were fostered among a number of families. Just with who all the children were fostered has not been determined, but Almira was almost certainly with her youngest sibling, Joseph J. Burrows, in the home of Peter and Anna Cline in Nelson Township at the time of the 1861 census.. This is the township wherein Almira's parents were residing at the time of their marriage. At a guess, the Clines were somehow kin, though just how has yet to be determined.

The 1861 census shows Almira's last name as Burns (though a bit ill-written); her younger brother's name, listed immediately after hers, is clearly written as Burrows. While one might argue that this is inconclusive, it seems entirely reasonable that they are sister and brother.

Whatever the case, Almira is certainly in Glenelg Township in Grey County - she was said to be resident there - by the time she married James Burnet in 1865. Just where her brother Joseph might have been we do not know.

A research note:

Almira shows her place of birth as Beverly Township on her marriage registration. This is probably accurate. Siblings provide the same information. Brother Joseph, however, locates his birth at Branchton, a village in present day North Dumfries Township in Waterloo County.

David R. McKnight wrote Waterloo Wills, A Genealogical Index of Wills and Estate Documents, 19th Century Land Registry Office Records, County of Waterloo, General Register Series, 1798-1918. This is available in PDF format and was obtained from the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

It identifies a will, that of Joseph Burrows, and dates the will to 29 July, 1858. Since Joseph is dead as of this date, this is probably the date of application for probate. It identifies the will as item ND826 and it shows Almira as the devisee. No other children are mentioned in this index. Joseph is described as a merchant.

This does agree with a will identified as nbr 408, that of Joseph Burrows, of Branchton, though this document is dated 1867. (It is possible that this relates to one or more beneficiaries becoming age of majority.) This latter document is referred to in Surrogate Court Index of Ontario, Canada, 1859-1900, Volume 13, Waterloo County, second edition, June Gibson, Elizabeth Hancocks, and Shannon Hancocks, Global Heritage Press, 2005.

The first referred document probably refers to a copy of the will as entered into a register at the Waterloo Land Record Office. The second document, recorded as being found in the Surrogate Court records, will almost certainly include the image of the whole will as it appears on microfilm at the Archives of Ontario.

'Amelia' Burnett died Sept. 3, 1916, at 225 Symington Ave. Age 73. Born Ontario. Widow. Burial Durham, Ont. Physician J. J. Matheson. Informant W. Spears, address W. Toronto (West Toronto.)

That Almira's name was written as Amelia is probably a handwriting issue along the chain of record, though it's entirely possible in later years that she went by Amelia. That she is indeed Almira is confirmed by locating the correct place of her burial as the cemetery at Durham, Ontario. Her gravestone shows her date of death as September 3, 1916. Add to that, page 17 of the Toronto Daily Star, 5 September, 1916 edition, has the following death notice:

Burnett - On Sunday Sept. 3rd, 1916, at the residence of her son-in-law D. McCoskery, 225 Symington Avenue, Toronto, Amelia Burnett, widow of the late James Burnett, of Durham, Ont.
Funeral service of Wednesday at 8:45pm. Interment at Durham on arrival of C.P.R. train leaving West Toronto 8:30am Thursday.
