An Elizabeth Burrows, age 12, appears in the 1861 census in the household of William and Kate Smith of Hamilton. He is shown as a bailiff and they are Wesleyan Methodists.

In 1871, Elizabeth is in Galt and shown as age 21, New Connection Methodist, servant, and residing in the boarding house of Lucy Cushnaghan.

She married Thomas Frederick Russell in Galt in 1874. She has yet to be found in the 1881 census.

By the time of the 1891 census, she is shown as a widow in Galt, age 41, Methodist, and a bread baker. With her are children Ethel 13, William 11, Maud 8, and Eva 5. All the children are shown as being born in Ontario.

The 1901 census tells a slightly different story. She is in Galt, age 51, no profession given. With her are daughters Ethel, Maud and Eva. Ethel is shown as being born in the U.S. in 1878; Maud and Eva are shown as being born in Ontario in 1882 and 1885.

Information as presented by a descendant on Find-a-Grave tells that Elizabeth died in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. The 1920 census shows her with daughter Eva (unmarried at the time) and they are with daughter Ethel and her husband Edgar Roesgen.

Interestingly, this census shows Edgar as being born in Canada, but Ethel as being born in Massachussetts. This would appear to account for the family not being found in Canada as of the 1881 census.

This leads us to the 1880 census at Holyoke, County of Hampden, Mass. This shows Thomas Russell working in a woollen mill. Elizabeth and a daughter Nettie, age 4, born in Canada, and Ethel, age 2, and William 6 months, both being born in Massachussetts.
