Mary Elizabeth Coates, 20, spinster, born township of Adelaide, residing township of Colborne. Methodist. Parents John and Mary Coates. On 24 Sept, 1884, at Goderich. By Rev. J.M. Campbell. The registration shows Albert's name as Oliver. There is no doubt that Lewis is the son of Albert and that the registration is a misreading of the information sent by the minister. There are no names shown for witnesses. |

Note | He Years of birth for Mary and son Harry are taken from the 1910 census taken at Bay City, Michigan. The 1900 census shows their coming to the U.S. in 1892. Certainly, they are in Bay City at the time of the 1894 Michigan State census. According to Judson Smith's death notice in the Galt Reporter, his brother Lewis Smith was living in Bay City, Michigan, in 1931. The 1900 census shows son Harry R. as being born in Canada, though a birth registration for him has not been found. |
