|Note||At the time of John's marriage to Melissa Smith on 16 October 1879, he was a widower. He first married Emily Shortbridge at Lynden, registration in Ancaster, on January 30, 1878. Emily died April 7, 1879, apparently from complications giving birth to their son. She is buried inTroy Cemetery. Their son Clarence was born April 1, 1879, in Beverly Township. John then married Melissa Smith on October 16, 1879, and they appear in the 1881 census at Beverly with Clarence. A transcription shows Clarence, age 2, as Clarane and a female, but this is obviously not correct. The 1881 census was conducted on or about April 4, 1881.Annie Laurie Clement, the daughter of John and Melissa was born July 26, 1881. The 1901 census taken at Hamilton shows John and Melissa with both Clarence and Annie. No evidence of other children has been found.|
John and Emily's son had the full name of Clarence George Clement. He married a Nettie Louisa Johnston in 1903 in the Algoma District, probably at Sault Ste. Marie. His parents are shown as John George Clement and Melissa Adele Smith. Evidence found shows that his mother was actually Emily Shortridge. Nettie's parents are shown as William Johnston and Mary Ann Colter. Clarence is shown as residing in Sault Ste. Marie and born in Beverly. Nettie is shown as born and residing in Hamilton.
