Rhoda Starr Harris1

ID # 698, (1845-1898)
Descendants of John Coleman & Elizabeth Lawrason
Rhoda Starr Harris was born in 1845 at England.1 She married Nelson Eldridge Vrooman, son of Admiral Nelson Vrooman and Rachel Coleman, on 8 May 1872 at St. George, Ontario. (notes: 25/116 ( Brant Co) Elridge W. VROOMAN , 28 , farmer , Harrisburg , same , s/o Admiral & Rachael , married Roda Starr HARRIS , 31 , widow , England , Harrisburg , d/o George & Charlotte , witn: John MULHOLLAND of Ancaster & Mary H. ANDREW of St. George , 8 May 1872 at St George

Nelson's full name was Nelson Eldridge Vrooman. The above registration would appear to have a transcription problem with the N. being shown as a W. Examination of microfilm suggests that this is the case.).1
She died on 27 January 1898 at Harrisburg, Brant County, Ontario.1 She was buried at Harrisburg Cemetery, Harrisburg, Brant County, Ontario.1 Examination of census information and obituaries show that the Starr family came from England. At the time of Rhoda's marriage she is said to be a widow and, failing to find a record of a husband in Canada, itwould seem that she was widowed in England. The age of younger familymembers at the time of the 1871 census makes this scenario likely. She was the daughter of George and Charlotte Starr. She had a sister Mary Ann Starr who married Nelson Muma. Interestingly, Rhoda's grave stone in the Harrisburg Cemetery shows only her maiden name, at least according to the available transcription. I read that the Harrisburg Cemetery has suffered vandalism and there are a number of stones in poor condition. This could account for the problem.

The following is a list of the people by the name of Starr in the Harrisburg United Church Cemetery. George and Charlotte are Rhoda's parents. Frederick is Rhoda's brother and Mary is her sister in law.

Starr, Charlotte, d. 19 Jan 1898, 79 yrs, w/o George Starr
Starr, Frederick, b. 24 Nov 1844, d. 2 Oct 1922
Starr, George, d. 13 Feb 1904, 90 yrs, 2 mons, 13 dys
Starr, Mary C. (Shuert), d. 8 May 1918, 74 yrs, w/o Frederick Starr
Starr, Rhoda, d. 23 Jan 1898, 55 yrs, dau/o Geo & Charlotte Starr

(In the 1901 census, George is living with Frederich and Mary. There is also a grandson George Starr with them, born May 30, 1883.)

Rhoda's death registration number is 001592-98. It gives her name as Rhoda Vroman and her residence as Harrisburg. She is said to be a farmer's wife so she would appear to be living with Nelson at the time.

At the time of the 1871 census, Rhoda is living with her parents and the enumerator has her surname as Starr. The family is listed as:
Starr, George, 57, born England
Sharlot, 52, born England
Roda, 30, born England
Sarah, 17 born England.
The next household is that of Frederick:
Starr, Frederick, 26, born England.
Mary, 23, born England.
Frank, 4, born England.
Ida, 3, born England.

The family does not appear to be in South Dumfries at the time of the1861 census. The writing for much of this is faded and reading it is difficult, but given the fact that the youngest family members was born in England in approximately 1868 the absence of the family from this census is logical.

Information for Rhoda's death is taken from her death registration. There is a discrepancy with her obituary from the Brantford Expositor. Her mother, Mrs. George Starr, is said in Rhoda's obituary to have died a week earlier, and this is born out by the South Dumfries death registration page which shows Charlotte's death on January 19, 1898. Theobituary says that Rhoda was buried beside her mother.1
