NoteShe So far, we have very little in the way of documentation to work on for information about Margaret Brush Smith McRoberts. The marriage registration of Rowland McRoberts does tell us that her name was Brush, but the clerk's handwriting is very poor and so this could be deemed arguable. Rowland's death registration, however, names her as Margaret Brush, so...Brush it is.

The 1861 census in Medonte Township, Simcoe County, tells us that Margaret, age 46, was born in Ireland, but that her two daughters, Margaret Smith, 23, and Ellen Smith, 19, were born in the United States. The 1871 census at Milton also shows her as being born in Ireland, but shows her daughters (who appear as Jane and Ellen) as being born in Ireland as well. This latter is some sort of error, which was hardly uncommon. Ellen's death registration shows her birth place as Buffalo and this is probably correct, or very nearly so.

The 1861 census shows her with two McRoberts children, those of Bryce. The oldest is Rowland, age 13, and Ruth, age 6. Ruth died in 1861 and is buried with her father in Troy Cemetery. Rowland lived on until 1919.

Daughter Margaret (Margaret Jane?) was still living as of the 1901 census, for she is with Rowland and his family at the time. Ellen Smith died in 1903 in Penetanguishene and Rowland was the informant. He is described as her half brother. Death registrations for the two Margarets, mother and daughter, have yet to be found.

A digression:

Library & Archives Canada provides an interpretation of the column headings for the 1861 census. Simply stated, and apparently applied against the head of the household, was the number of deaths, male or female, in 1860, and the cause of death. This query was occasionaly misintepreted. For example, William Jack of Innisfil Township who appears in this tree has his name entered and his passing duly recorded, though he'd been dead since the previous year. This we may confirm by a transcription of Sixth Line Cemetery in Innisfil which shows his death in 1860.

With Margaret McRoberts of Medonte, shown as age 47, there is one death recorded for the household in 1860, a male, cause of death disease of the heart.

This can only be her husband, Bryce McRoberts, who died on June 1, 1860. This is confirmed by a transcription of Troy Cemetery. His gravestone shows his death date, but it is also confirmed in the June 6, 1860, edition of the Canada Christian Advocate, the extraction of which is provided by the Waterdown-East Flamborough Heritage Society of Waterdown, on page 8 of their September, 1996, publication.
A death registration and place of burial for Margaret Brush Smith McRoberts has yet to be found, but, at a guess, she is buried with her first husband.
