Smith, 26, widower, farmer, Presbyterian. Born Canada, residing St. Marys. Parents Alex and Jane Smith. Martha 'Downey', 23, spinster, Methodist. Born Canada, residing Tecumseth. Parents Benjamin and Hannah 'Downey'. Witnesses George Bennett and Alice Dorsey, (apparently) both of Clarksville. On May 1, 1877, at Bond Head, by Rev. D. F. Gee. The township registration must have had trouble with the handwriting of the reporting clergyman. Two birth registrations have been found for daughters of Thomas and Martha and they make it clear that Martha was indeed Martha Dorsey. |
| Note | She Martha's parents and older siblings are in Caledon Township of Peel County as of the 1851 census - actually begun in January of 1852. The family has not been found as of the 1861 census. In 1871, the family, Martha included, is inTecumseth Township of Simcoe County. In 1877, Martha married Thomas Taylor Smith and the 1881 census finds them residing in St. Marys, Blanchard Township, Perth County. They are still in St. Marys as of the 1891 census, but by the time of the 1901 census are in Elkhorn Village in Manitoba. The last certain record found for daughters Ethel and Selina is the 1891 census. Milburn is with his parents in Elkhorn as of the 1901 census. Milburn was apparently later in Saskatchewan. Ancestry carries some Saskatchewan death indexes and show one for Milburn, stating that he died in 1959 in Saskatoon. Thomas and Martha have been found in the 1926 census at Elkhorn. This is the latest available census. Manitoba Vital Statistics has a searcheable index and this, while not greatly informative, has a death indexed for a Martha Smith on the 6th of May, 1934, at Elkhorn. While hardly certain, this is probably Martha Dorsey. No death index resembling anything we might identify as being for Thomas has been found. |
