Mary Ann Hamilton
     Mary Ann Hamilton was born on 4 May 1869 at South Crosby Twp, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.1 She has also been reported to have been born on 4 May 1868.2 She was the daughter of Charles Hamilton and Mary Jordan.1 She was baptized on 6 June 1869 at St Edward the Confessor Church, Westport, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.1 She married James Joseph Doyle, son of Michael Doyle and Elizabeth Mary Dunn, on 4 November 1889 at St Philip Neri Church, Toledo, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.3,4 Mary and James Joseph lived at 37 Columbia St E, New Westminster, British Columbia, from 1891 until before 1917 in the married quarters near the prison on what was known as "Pen Row", these consisted of six duplex houses 2 1/2 storeys high; they paid $5.00 a month rent. These houses were sold and moved away about 1970.6,7,5

On 16 Feb 1891, Mary Ann wrote a letter to her sister-in-law Frances Doyle in Jones Falls, Ontario describing events in New Westminster, BC.

She lived at 512 Kelly Street, Sapperton, (New Westminster), British Columbia, on 5 December 1917.8 She lived at 448 Kelly Street, Sapperton, (New Westminster), British Columbia, on 20 September 1919.8 She lived at 511 Kelly Street, Sapperton, (New Westminster), British Columbia, from before Nov 1938 until shortly before her death. Her grandson James Gordon Doyle remembers walking from his home in New Westminster to visit and to mow her lawn.9,10,2,11 She died on 19 April 1955 of carcinomatosis, carcinoma left kidney at New Westminster, British Columbia, at age 85.2,10

Mary's obituary in the Daily Columbian, New Westminster, British Columbia, on 19 April 1955 read:
"Mrs Mary Ann Doyle, formerly of 511 Kelly Street, died in St Mary’s hospital this morning. Born in Ontario, Mrs Doyle was 86 years of age and had lived in New Westminster for 66 years. She was the widow of James Hamilton Doyle. Surviving her are eight sons: Tim and Charles, New Westminster; James H in Washington; Gus and Spike of Vancouver Island; Gordon J Burnaby; Frank and Cyril of Vancouver; 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Friends will meet for prayers on Thursday at 7:30pm in St Peters Church and at 8:00pm in the funeral home of S Bowell and Son.

Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00am in St Peters Church by Rev Father Sweeney OMI. Interment will be in St Peters Cemetery."12

She was buried on 22 April 1955 at St Peter's Cemetery, New Westminster, British Columbia.12,10
