Daniel Joseph Kenney was born on 15 October 1848 at Ireland.2,3 He was the son of Patrick Kenney and Mary O'Neill.1 He immigrated to South Crosby Twp, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario, with his parents Patrick Kenney and Mary O'Neill about 1849.4 Daniel is described as a boatman on the 1881 census. It was common for men from South Crosby to work the steamboats on the Rideau Canal and the St Lawrence River during the summer months. Daniel may have given this up, as did his brother Thomas, after he married.5,6 He married Ellen Doyle, daughter of Michael Doyle and Elizabeth Mary Dunn, on 30 January 1882 at Philipsville, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.3
