Catherine (Burns) Jordan
Catherine Burns was born on 24 September 1869 at South Crosby Twp, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.2,3,4 She was the daughter of John Burns and Lydia Nolan.1 She married James Edward Jordan, son of John Jordan and Johanna Nolan, on 21 November 1898 at St Philip Neri Church, Toledo, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.1 She died on 12 November 1954 at Elgin, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario, at age 85.2,4 She was buried at St Columbanus Cemetery, Elgin, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.2

"Catherine (Kate) was baptized Roman Catholic when she was 18 months old at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Phillipsville, Ontario. She married James Jordan and they built a small house near Foster's Locks, near Elgin. They lived there for a few years and then moved to a farm near Clear Lake. They raised 4 children on the farm. One winter day, James went to cut wood with his brother-in-law Vince Kenney. While he was in the bush, James suffered a heart attack and died. Mary and Helen were in school in Westport when they were told that their father was dead. The nuns told them they were not to cry.

After James' death the family had a difficult time financially. The farm house burned and they moved to the village of Elgin. Hilda became a teacher and helped Helen go through Ottawa Normal School to be a teacher. Then Hilda and Helen helped Mary go to the School of Nursing at St Vincent de Paul Hospital, Brockville. James was adamant that his girls would have an education. He was ahead of his time in this regard and his family carried out his wishes."4
