Michael Doyle

     Michael Doyle was born about 1823 at Ballindaggan, Templeshanbo, Co Wexford, Ireland.1,2,3,4 He was the son of James Doyle and Ellen Burn.4 He immigrated before 1851 to Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario. It is likely that he immigrated in 1847/48 during the potato famine in Ireland. Neither the exact date nor the name of the ship he arrived on have been determined. In 1848 the average length of a voyage between Ireland and Quebec was 43 days.5 He married Elizabeth Mary Dunn, daughter of Martin Dunn and Sarah Keating, on 20 February 1855 at St Edward the Confessor Church, Westport, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.4,6 He lived at Lot 8 Con 5, South Crosby Twp, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario, in 1858.7 He was a Lock Laborer at Jones Falls, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario, in 1861.2 He was a farmer in 1871.3 He lived at Lot 7 Con 5 (20 acres W of Jones Falls Road), South Crosby Twp, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario, in 1874.7 He left a will on 27 July 1878.8 He was illiterate as evidenced by his will signed with "X his mark".8 He died on 12 August 1878 at South Crosby Twp, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.9,10 He was buried on 14 August 1878 at Philipsville Catholic Cemetery, Philipsville, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.11,12 His estate was not probated until 13 June 1894. The reason for this delay is not known. However, the filing of the probate records finally occured when his widow Elizabeth wanted to mortgage the property, which she did, for $900, on 11 Jul 1894.9,7
