Percival Claude Broder

      Percival Claude Broder was born on 10 August 1899 at La Conner, Skagit County, Washington.¹ He was the son of John Broder and Alice Mary Graves.^1,2 Percival Claude Broder was a student at Walla Walla College in 1918.³ On 12 September 1918, at Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, Percy registered for the draft. He was described as short, small stature, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was enrolled in a pre-medical program at Walla Walla College at the time. He married first (--?--) (--?--). He married second Melba Vera Pappajohn, daughter of John Sigsworth and Esther Wilson, on 25 June 1941 at New Westminster, British Columbia. The wedding took place at the home of Melba's brother.⁴ On 3 Apr 1942, Percy completed a border crossing manifest in order to gain entry to the US for a one-day business trip. He lived with his mother Alice Mary Graves at 3335 Ninth Ave West, Seattle, King County, Washington, between 1943 and 1948. He was working at the War Department in 1944.⁵ He married third Hannah Charlotte Baierle on 7 August 1960 at the home of Hannah's son Charles Baierle at Alderwood Manor, Snohomish County, Washington.^6,7 He and Hannah Charlotte Baierle were divorced in July 1964 at Seattle, King County, Washington.⁸ Nothing is known of Percy's first marriage. His second and third marriages were very brief. In both cases his wives reverted to their previous names afterwards. He had no children. He died on 16 August 1974 at Seattle, King County, Washington, at age 75.^1,9 An obituary appeared in The Seattle Times on 19 Aug 1974.¹⁰ He was buried on 20 August 1974 at Oaklake Section, Washelli Cemetery, Seattle, King County, Washington.¹

Percy's niece Marion (Broder) Doyle remembers: Percy and his brother Harold had a company named Furst & Wahl on the corner of First & Wall Streets in Seattle, WA. Written in Ripley's Believe It or Not: "Mr Furst & Mr Wahl own a company on First and Wall". He bought out people's savings accounts during the depression paying 10 cents on the dollar. Percy ran Robert Broder's tomato cannery at Grand Forks, BC for a year.¹¹
