On 8 February, 1900, in Nelson, British Columbia, Charles joined the Lord Strathcona Horse for service in the South African War. His birthplace is shown as Dundas and his next of kin Wm. Cottrill of Dundas, Ontario. According to the file provided by Canada Archives and available online, Charles died of 'enteric' on 24 June 1900 in Durban, Natal. The Canada Veterans Affairs website shows him as being with the Lord Strathcona Horse, confirms his date of death as 24 June, 1900, and states that he was the son of Mrs. William Cottrill of Dundas, Ontario. It goes on to say that he is buried in the Wyatt Road Cemetery in Durban. A South African web site that has many cemeteries photographed, has a photo of Charles gravestone. The cemetery is shown as the Ordnance Road Military Cemetery. The photo of Charles' stone shows him as Pte. C. W. Cotterill/ S. H./Died 24 June 1900/Aged 23. |
