| Note | The 1949 Wickersham-Comstock history of the Vrooman Family, written in 1949, states that Margaret, daughter of Adam Vrooman Jr, married George Main. Yes, she married George Main; no, she was not the daughter of Adam Vrooman Jr. We are on safe ground to say that Adam's daughter Margaret married Charles Smith. They lived their later years near Seaforth, Ontario. For most census years Margaret Vrooman Smith stated that her mother was born in New Brunswick and this agrees with what we know of Elizabeth McCowan Vrooman. On pages 110 and 111 of the 1949 book, children wrongly presented as those of Adam Vrooman Jr. and who we may documentably show to be the children of Arents (Elam, Jane, Mary Ann, Christine and Luceyne/Lucy) include with them Margaret. She is said to have married George Main. By process of the elmination of the Margaret Vroomans in the extended family, we are left to conclude that she is indeed a daughter of Arents. It is frustrating that we are unable to find a record for Margaret prior to the 1861 census, by which time she is already married to George Main and son Emerson is present. Much of the 1851 Beverly Township census has not survived. Margaret does not appear with her parents in the 1851 census in Garafraxa Township, but by 1851 she will have been past the age of 30 and quite probably out working. Arents and his family did not move from Beverly Township to Garafraxa until 1842, by which time Margaret was approximately 23 years of age. She may well have worked in Beverly among people with whom she'd grown up. It's even possible that she was married prior to her marriage to George. The Mecosta Michigan Genealogical Society has provided an obituary from a Mecosta county newspaper. A photo copy of the obituary has been provided. It is dated May 17, 1882. Unhappily, the society was unable to provide the name of the newspaper from which it had been extracted, though they suggest that it is a Big Rapids newspaper. It reads in part: Mrs. Margaret J. Main, wife of Geo. Main of Galt, Canada, and step-mother to Charles, Henry and John Main and Mrs. D. Rolefson of this township, died at the latter's residence last Saturday at a quarter to 11 o'clock A.M. of congestion of the lungs. She came with her husband a few days before her death in response to a telegram announcing the serious illness of their son Charles, and on Sunday morning after her arrival was taken sick and died as stated. The funeral took place at the Decker school house yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. F.T. Lumber conducted the service and her remains were placed in the Decker burying ground. etc. A photo of Margaret's stone appears on Find-a-Grave. The stone dates Margaret's death to May 3, 1882. Her age is given as 65 years, 2 months, and 10 days. This would place her birth year to 1817. This conflicts with the year of sister Mary's birth. |
