Eliza Field
ID # 1688, (1838-1924)
| Father | John Morden Field (1793-) |
| Mother | Elizabeth Ann Vrooman (1801-1889) |
| Baptism | Eliza Field was baptized in 1838. |
| Marriage | She married Samuel McFate on 24 October 1867 at Lincoln County. MS248 reel 10, Vol. 33, page 92 Lincoln County Marriage By the Rev. J. McGillivray, Canada Presbyterian Church Samuel McFate, 24, born (looks like) Penn, NY, residing St. Catharines. Parents Samuel and Elizabeth. Eliza Field, 25, born and residing Grimsby. Parents John and Elizabeth Field. Witnesses: Andrew Randall of Grimsby. There is a second witness, but the name of the person and residence is illegible. On 24 October, 1867. Going by the 1850 and 1860 censuses, Samuel's place of birth was Pennsylvania. Samuel's surname, McFate, has been variously transcribed from this registration, but, with knowledge of his correct name sorted out beforehand, it is quite obviously entered on the page as McFate. The county marriage registrations from this era do not typically tell us the place of the marriage. It may well have been in Grimsby, either town or township, but this isn't certain. |
| Death | She died on 15 September 1924 at St. Catharines, Lincoln County, Ontario. |
| Burial | She was buried on 17 September 1924 at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines, Ontario. |
| Note | Eliza's age as given on her marriage registration is light compared to her age as it appears in the 1851 and 1861 censuses at Grimsby. Her birth year is shown as 1838. It is approximate, but will be close. We may now identify Eliza's husband as Samuel McFate. Spellings vary. They had with them a son John, age 2 in 1871, and age 12 in 1881. A record for John after that has not been found. Death reg. 020002-24 St. Catharines, Lincoln County Eliza Field McFate, 96 Niagara St., age 85, widowed. Born Smithville, October 1839. At place of death 35 years. Father John Field, born Smithville, mother Elizabeth Vroman, born Niagara-on-the-Lake. Informant John Field, Bradford, Pa., nephew. Date of death September 15, 1924, date of burial September 17, 1924. Place of burial St. Catharines. A transcription for Victoria Lawn Cemetery has not been examined, but this is almost certainly where Eliza is buried. An index appears to place Samuel in Victoria Lawn. |
