| Note | Emma is shown as Emily in the 1860 census at Niagara Falls, New York. In the 1881 census in Stamford Township, Welland County, Ontario, she is also shown as Emily. Otherwise, she appears as Emma and Fairview Cemetery has her indexed as Emma (Shattock). We do not have a birth or baptism record for Emma. Familysearch.org provides us with a transcription of her death registration. This is rather garbled, but clearly states that her parents were Luther B. Russell and Mary Ann Coffee. The transcription states that she died in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, on 2 January, 1932. She is shown to be a widow and it states that she was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario. After that, the transcription is problematic. It gives her age as 65. This is much younger than she really was. For example, the 1920 census at Detroit presents her age as 59. This is much closer to her real age and agrees with such earlier census records as we may find. The transcription goes on to give her date of birth as 25 April, 1886. This is clearly innacurate. Niagara Falls cemeteries, in their online listing for Fairview Cemetery, shows that Emma is buried with her brothers George and William in Section H, plot 0025, grave 3. The Fairview index does not provide us with a photo of a stone for Emma, nor does it provide us with a date of burial. Emma married on December 6, 1919, to Walter Shattock. He was a widower. It clearly shows her parentage as Luther B. (Russell) and Mary Coffee. It also shows her as being previously married once and it shows her previous married surname - which is illegibly written and she has not been found in either the U.S. or Canada under her first married name. If she ever had children, they remain unknown to us. Since Emma's remains were returned to Niagara Falls for burial, we must believe that Walter Shattock was buried with his first wife. |
