NoteMost of our background for Adam, son of Nicholas, is taken from the Vrooman Family book of 1949, pages 105 and 106. This Adam, nephew of Adam Vrooman, UEL, of Niagara, Upper Canada, was sometimes referred to as Little Adam. He is of some interest to us, for the family story is that he was assured of a start in life in Canada, but found that he would have to renounce his American loyalities. He returned to the U.S. and later went to Illinois. His son Adam Clark Vrooman was born in LaSalle, Illinois.

A history for Jo Daviess County in Illinois places an Adam Vrooman there from early days. We find a Bureau of Land Management record filed in 1838 at the Galena Land office in Jo Daviess County for Adam Vroman applying for land in La Salle County. The 1949 book shows Adam, son of Nicholas, marrying first an Evalina Vrooman and, second, a Susan Clark. The book states that Susan Clark outlived him and later remarried.

Was 'Little Adam' the Adam Vrooman who married Alathea Waddams in Jo Daviess County on Feb. 12, 1837? A Jo Daviess history website does tell of this marriage. The same site also states that the couple divorced in 1845. The 1840 census at Winnebago County, Illinois, shows an Adam Vroman with a minor female child. A Wadhams family history shows Althea marrying Adam Vroman and tells that they had a daughter Lucy. Alathea is said to have remarried in later years and gone to California. A brief mention of Adam Vroman's marriage to 'Alathera' may be found on page 541 of Wadhams Genealogy,1913, Frank Allabben Genealogical Company, New York. This has been digitized by Microsoft and is available in pdf format.

The 1840 Winnebago County census shows George Vrooman three households away from Adam in Winnebago. This is at a time when George's son Adam would have been too young to have his own family.

We may add here that access to the Illinois state census of 1865 is now available via FamilySearch. The census shows the names of heads of household only, but does give the following information.

In the town of Lasalle in the county of Lasalle:
Adam Vrooman:
1 male age 10 and under; 1 female over 10, but less than 20; 1 male over 60, but less than 70.

If indeed Adam N. Vrooman, son of Nicholas and first cousin of George Laws Vrooman, married Alathea Waddams, then it appears that their child Lucy never survived to adulthood.

Obviously, more research is needed.
