DeathShe died on 17 January 1896 at Austin Twp., Mecosta Co., Michigan.
NoteShe To the best of our information, Mary was the first born child of Mercy Vrooman and Isaac Pettit. She appears with her parents in Garafraxa Township, Wellington County, Canada West, in the 1851 census. She is age 9. By 1860, her parents are in Newaygo County in Michigan. Mary is as well, but at age 16, so stated, she married John. M. Tift in Everett Township in Newaygo County, in 1859. The 1860 census shows Mary and John in Big Prairie in Newaygo County.

By the time of the 1870 census, Mary and John are in Mecosta County in the Town of Austin. So also is Mary's brother Elam Pettit. John and Mary as well as brother Elam are still in Austin in the 1880 census.

Of course, the 1890 census is lost to us, but we find Mary's death registration as follows:

County of Mecosta Record 5. Date of death January 17, 1896. Mary Tift, married, age 53, place of death Austin Township. Born Canada. Housewife. Parents Isaac and Mary Pellet, so spelled, residing Croton.

It is understood from a transcription that Mary is buried in Stanwood Cemetery, Stanwood, Mecosta County, Michigan.
