The following comments have little to do with Norman Wilson Long and the reader can ignore as wished.

The Archives of Ontario indexes registrations, whether birth, marriage or death, by the year of registration. As noted above, Norman Long's birth was in December of 1884, but not registered until March of 1885. Hence, if the registration is being sought at the AO, it will be found in the index for 1885. This is standard. For someone searching the (mostly) excellent indexing to be found on Ancestry or Familysearch, this is unnecessary. The image can usually be found immediately.

The pages show space for six birth registrations to a page and so when the double pages are filled there can be twelve registrations.

Norman Long's registration is the first one shown at the top of the left hand page. Of the twelve registrations shown, eight are 1884 births and the other four are early 1885. Seven of the registrations were entered in March of 1885 and the other five were entered in April of 1885. Normally, with most towns and townships, this would represent the date when the registration was presented. These registrations came to the clerk on special small forms that, for births and deaths, would be found in the township clerk's office, but also in some post offices in the township. Local doctors also probably had pads of them on hand.

It's not at all clear where at the time the township clerk, Charles Gordon, had his office. It was probably in Annan, or Leith, though there are other possibilities. Some of the township farms must, in winter, have been very isolated, and it's tempting to wonder if the farm families had to wait till spring thaw to get out for such functions as birth and death registrations. Pages before and after the one registering Norman Long's birth, however, do show mid winter registrations and some of these were filed by Dr. Sloane who seems to have had most of the baby deliverance industry wrapped up. Since Dr. Sloane's registrations also appear on the double pages showing Norman's birth, we must discount the isolation notion and conclude that the clerk found a wad of reports that he hadn't hitherto entered and finally got caught up with his paperwork.

The only other thing to note is that nearly half the births entered were without benefit of medical assistance, though there is the possibility that some other family members were present, or neighbours, who performed the function of midwife and that this was unrecorded. Norman Long's birth is recorded as being without medical assistance.

Norman and Violet were in Sydenham Township at the time of the last available census, 1921. By 1935 the voters' list shows Norman and Violet in the town of Seaforth in Huron County. By 1949, Norman is in Kippen where he is shown as a mail courier. He apparently remarried.
