1861 - Return of marriages for the year 1861

No. 6 Solemnized by Rev'd Michael Fawcett - A Minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Matthew H. Carr, 28, residing Brantford, born England. Parents Matthew and Sarah.
Sophia S. Fawcett, 18, residing Grimsby, born Brantford. Parents Thomas and Margaret.
Witnesses: William Nelles and Joseph Palmer, both of Grimsby.
Date of marriage June 18, 1861.

In one or two places on the registration the handwriting is difficult to read, but the county clerk does appear to have Matthew's middle initial as H. Other information considered, his middle initial was X. His middle name was Xavier.

The officiating clergyman, Michael Fawcett, was Sophia's uncle. Sophia's father Thomas was en route to see his brother Michael in Grimsby when the train on which he was a passenger derailed and he subsequently died of his injuries. The marriage registration does not specifically locate the marriage, but the couple was almost certainly married in Grimsby.
