| Note | Birth and death information that we have for Thomas comes from Lawrence Lawrason Jr.'s handwritten genealogy as copied in Delores MacIntyre's work on pages 26 and 27. Damaris Chase of Evanston, Illinois, is the source for the Lawrason history in The Annals of the Forty, Vol. VI. Here, she states that Thomas Lawrason married (1) Mary Howell and (2) Charity Howell, Mary's sister. The book Early Germans of New Jersey tells a different story. They show Mary and Charity Howell marrying a Thomas Larison, but he is the son of William and Patience Larison. They name children George and Mary (said to have married Josiah Stark) for Mary Howell Larison and Rachel Ann for Charity Howell Larison. This same chapter tells that Thomas Larison took his family to Illinois. The 1850 census in Bureau County, Illinois shows Thomas Larison with daughter Rachel Ann. They are living with Josiah and Mary H. Stark. Thomas is still with them at the time of the 1860 census. Josiah and Mary are still in Bureau County in 1870, but Thomas is no longer present and is likely dead by that time. These census pages make it clear that Thomas, son of William and Patience, was born in New Jersey. At some remove, he was likely related to the Lawrasons of Upper Canada for the Early Germans book shows descent of the family from John Larason, the Dane. Thomas Lawrason, son of Lawrence Lawrason and Rachel Pettit, was, according to his brother Lawrence Jr., born in the Niagara District of Upper Canada. Thomas seems to have led an interesting existence. He is said to have served with Brock at the taking of Detroit during the War of 1812. Delores MacIntyre states that Thomas Lawrason, sometime after 1824, went to Marengo County in the state of Alabama. (He is probably the Thomas Lawrason, witness, at the marriage of brother Joseph Lawrason and Samantha Curtis on 25th May, 1826, in St. Thomas, Upper Canada.) A letter from him datelined White Hall Post Office, Marengo, Alabama 10th March, 1838, has survived in the Lawrence Lawrason papers at the University of Western Ontario. It is possible that his life in Marengo County, Alabama, was of short duration. Records have been found showing his purchase of two pieces of land in Marengo County on March 30, 1837. As he is recorded by Lawrence Lawrason, his brother, as having died in June of 1840, his stay in Alabama may have been as little as three years. He has not been found in the 1830 or 1840 census in Alabama. He is not known to have had children, though in a letter to his brother Lawrence Lawrason Jr. he alludes to a wife, unnamed. A brief marriage transcription exists for Thomas Lawrason in Marengo County, Alabama. It states that on 10 June 1835 a Thomas Lawrason married a Rebecca May. No further information for Rebecca has been found. |
