| Note | Thomas Smith is shown in Brant Township, Bruce County, in the 1851 census as age 46 and he is shown as a Presbyterian, born in Wales. His wife is shown as Elizabeth. This may be in some manner correct, but she is shown as Jannett, per the 1861 census. It is believed that Elizabeth in 1851 and Jannett in 1861 are one and the same person. See notes under Jannett. The 1851 census shows all children as being born in Wales. How correct this is remains to be resolved. The names and ages of the Smith children are taken from the 1851 census. By the time of the 1861 census in Brant Township, only sons James and Samuel are with Thomas and Jannett. Samuel's wife Lavinia is with them as well as two year old Henrietta. The rendering of Lavinia's name is questionable. |
