| Marriage | He married Elizabeth Ann Sager, daughter of Malachi Sager and Sarah Dean, on 25 June 1847 at Gore District. MS248 reel 1 Vol. 4, Gore District Marriage Register, 1842-1855. Marriages by Rev. William Smith Baptist minister, page 91 William Crawford of St. George and Elizabeth Segor of Beverly, married on 25 June 1847. Witnesses M. Segor and John D. Carpenter. The image for the above is to be found on Familysearch's Ontario, District Marriage Registers, 1801-1858, see image 96. The microfilm identification is taken from an Archives of Ontario PDF entitled District Marriage Records, 1780-1858. The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada / Canada West, Vol. 13, Gore District, 1842-1856, compiled by Dan Walker & Fasne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press, 2000, was also referred to. This last assists in identifying the clergyman. As an aside, it is believed that there was a Gore District Marriage Register for marriages prior to the above, which begins in 1842, but that it has not survived. |

| Note | Not much has been found in the way of information for William Crawford, yet something of a story may be put together. William Crawford and Elizabeth Ann Sager were married in the Gore District on 25 June, 1847. District and County marriage registrations, do not typically give us the location of the marriage, but William was at the time of St. George and Elizabeth was said to be of Beverly. Considering that she was the daughter of Malachi Sager Sr. of Beverly, they may well have been married at the bride's home. At some point, the Crawfords moved to Beverly, for they are there at the time of the 1861 census and William is said to be a merchant. With them are four children, including Lavinia, the oldest, age 13 as of her next birthday. John A. Cornell wrote two books, The Pioneers of Beverly in 1889, and The First Church of Beverly in 1921. The dedication page of this latter book reads as follows: To my wife The constant companion of nearly 50 years Married John A. Cornell and Lavinia Crawford, eldest daughter of the late William Crawford and Elizabeth A. Sager of Branchton, Ontario, June 5th, 1872 The last paragraph to the preface to this book reads in part: I desire to thank my wife's brother, Professor A. W. Crawford of the University of Manitoba, for the encouragement he has given me in this undertaking, and for his work in editing the manuscript and in proof reading the entire book, and seeing it through the press. When his wife Elizabeth Ann married William Lewis in 1878, John A. Cornell of Beverly, Elizabeth's son-in-law, was one of the witnesses to the marriage. The Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society records William Crawford's gravestone in Troy Cemetery. It reads William Crawford died Jan. 2, 1868, aged 41 yrs., & 9 mos. Elizabeth Ann is buried with her second husband, William Lewis, in section 4, Mountview Cemetery, Galt. |
