The marriage record for Robert Chamblet Adams and Mary Emily Job is taken from the index provided by FreeBMD. It places the marriage in Birkenhead, Cheshire, though it should be noted that Birkenhead is the registration district, within which are several civil parishes. One of these parishes is Oxton, which may (or may not) be where the marriage actually took place. The marriages are recorded in quarters and the marriage of Robert and Mary Emily took place in the quarter ending September of 1871. The actual date of the marriage will be somewhere in the three month spread between 1 July and September 30. |

| Burial | He was buried at Seaside Cemetery, Blue Hill, Hancock County. |
| Note | Robert and Mary are in the 1891 census at Montreal West. He is shown as a 'Free Thinker'. Mary is shown as being born in Newfoundland. With them is son Walter, age 18. Walter, age 28, is still with his parents in Montreal in 1901. His father's occupation is illegible. His mother is shown as being born in NF. Walter is shown as a mining engineer. His parents are shown as coming to Canada in 1872. Information as to the birth, death, and place of burial for Robert Chamblet Adams is thanks in large part to Find-a-Grave. There is an excellent photo of Robert's gravestone with a readable (and extensive) inscription which satisfactorily identifies him. It reads: ERECTED BY HIS FRIENDS. CAPT. ROBERT CHAMBLET ADAMS Born in Boston, Mass. Dec. 1, 1839 Died in Sedgwick, Me. Aug 10th 1902 President of The Montreal Pioneer Freethought Club Past President of The Canadian Secular Union. --- 'Character is above Creed and Goodness is a matter of Life, not of Belief. Therefore do not shun nor judge harshly those who differ in Opinion from you. Doubt is the father of Progress. Do not stifle its Questionings, but prove all things for yourselves.' The World is My Country To do Good My Religion Thomas Paine Robert, inspired perhaps by his association with the Freethought Club and the Canadian Secular Union, wrote several books. The reference 'Captain', as it appears on his gravestone, is at first obscure, but he evidently captained sailing ships and at one point is said to have sailed around the world. See Lucifer, 28 August, 1902, pages 256 and 257. In it, we are told that after 15 years of sea life, he married an English lady in Liverpool. Thereafter, he conducted a shipping and commission business at Montreal which he gave up in 1882 and thereafter was involved in phosphate and other mining concerns - probably accounts for, betimes, his son Walter being shown as a mining engineer in some census information. Just why Robert died in Maine remains unexplained. |
