NoteHe Charles Muma appears with his parents, Michael and Elizabeth, in the 1851, 1861, and 1871 censuses in South Dumfries, Brant County. This last census shows him as age 23.

On April 2nd, 1872, he married Charlotte Rutherford in Barrie. He is shown as 24 and the son of Michael and Elizabeth Muma though his place of birth is only given as Ontario, and the registration shows him as a mechanic. Charles and Charlotte must have remained in Barrie at least some months, for their daughter Florence was born in Barrie - we must approximate - in the month of January of 1873.

We only know of daughter Florence from her death registration in South Dumfries. No birth registration has been found. We only know of her place of birth as Barrie because this is so stated on her death registration. She died in South Dumfries on August 4th, 1873, age 7 months, so, apparently, between January and August of 1873, Charles returned to South Dumfries with his wife and child, though a later record for Charlotte has not with any certainty been found.

Which brings us to a transcription of the South Dumfries Baptist Church Cemetery done by the Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. This is undated and appears on a CD entitled South Dumfries Small Cemeteries.

In this cemetery we find a stone for Elizabeth Matthews Muma, the mother of Charles, and Jacob Muma and Susan Starnaman, Michael's parents. The Matthews-Muma stone is shown in the transcription as number 10.

Stones 6 and 7 read as follows:

6 Muma unknown, Muma, born November 12, 1851, died September 15, 1892
(As it happens, stone 6 is for Mary Muma, Charles' sister. See notes for Mary.)

7 (surname unknown) Florence E.

Is stone 7 for infant Florence? Probably, but we don't know. By the time the transcription of this cemetery was done for Interment.net in 2001, stone 7 was not in evidence.

In later years, Charles was a photographer. He spent time in Iowa and correspondence with Matthews descendants turned up the fact that they had old family photos with the name of the photographer on the corner, Charles Muma.
