| Note | Pages 2 and 3 of section 2 of the Bell-Cornwell Family Record tell us that John N. Coleman's mother died when he was two years old and he was raised in the home of Phoebe and Gabriel Cornwell. John's mother is not named. The story goes on to say that a son of John compiled a record that stated that John's father was Phillip Coleman and his wife Elizabeth. Other records indicate that this is not the case and that his birth father was Samuel. Certainly, a G.A.R. record card names his father as Samuel. The story tells that John N. Coleman was quite close to Phoebe and Gabriel and he was with Gabriel's unit when Gabriel was killed at Vicksburg. John was said to be quite bitter about what be believed to be poor leadership, resulting in Gabriel's death. An obituary for John N. Coleman appears in the Fredericksburg (Iowa) News, Thursday, March 16, 1939. It dates his birth to June 29, 1844, in Ancaster. The northern border of Ancaster Township meets the first concession of Beverly, which is that township's southern border. John's grandfather, John W. Coleman, who lived on lot 6 of the 1st concession no doubt looked across the road to Ancaster on a daily basis. By 1844, both John W. Coleman and his son William Hayes Coleman, were gone from lot 6 of Beverly's 1st concession. How long Samuel might have lived in Ancaster, or who or when Samuel married, is, to this date, lost to us. One clue may reside in John N. Coleman's middle initial. His full middle name has yet to be found and it does not appear in the above obituary. |
