| Note | Ira Doud's grave is in Culver Cemetery, Townsend Township, Norfolk County. This has been transcribed by the Norfolk County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. It reads: In Memory of / Ira / Son of / Samuel S. & Eleanor J. / Doud / Died Sept. 1st, 1870 / Aged 26 yrs. 5 ms. & 4 days. From this, his date of birth is calculated to March 28th, 1844. We have nothing that says so, but he may well have been born in Dumfries Township for the Douds were present there in earlier years and his grandfather's name was Ira. A death registration for Ira has not been found, but the 1871 census has a page entited: Page 1, North Norfolk, Sub District C., Township of Townsend, Nominal Return of Deaths Within the Last Twelve Months. In this we are informed of the following: Ira Doud, age 26, male, W. Methodist, born American, trade engineer, month of death September, cause of death accident by cars. We have no clarity, but it may be that Ira died in a work related railroad accident. |
