Jane Wilber

ID # 3940, (1826-)
FatherJeremiah Wilber (1797-1867)
MotherSusan Kitchen (1797-1872)
BirthJane Wilber was born in 1826.
NoteJane appears in the 1851 census taken in South Dumfries Township. She is with her family and apparently the oldest child present. Her age as written is questionable. It may be 20, but could be 25. Add to that, the 1851 census wasn't actually taken until January of 1852 and the question of age was supposed to be asked as: What is your age as of your next birthday?

The difficulty with the age 20 scenario is that the census tells that she was born in the 'States'. Eliza, the next sibling present, is shown as age 18 and born in Canada. Jane's father is present in Dumfries Township in the 1832 census. This document states that Jeremiah has in his household 2 males and 3 females under 16 and 1 male and 7 females over 16. From this, we may reasonably say that Jeremiah and Susan were residing in Dumfries as of 1832 with their children. It might be that an older child could have remained in the United States, but the younger children such as were living at the time would have been with their parents. Enumerator errors are always a possibility, but it's likely that Jane's age was older than 20, which, at first glance, is what is shown on the 1851 census.
