John Brown
ID # 4246, (1815-1901)
| Baptism | John Brown was baptized in July 1815 at Scotland. |
| Marriage | He married Agnes Colvin, daughter of Andrew Colvin and Agnes Law, on 9 February 1844 at Gore District. MS248 reel 1, Vol. 4, page 10 Gore District Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages by Robert Lindsay, Presbyterian. John Brown and Agnes Colvin, both of Dumfries, married by license on Feb. 9, 1844. Witnesses James Kay and William Kay. District marriage registrations do not usually give a marriage location. Beyond the fact that the marriage was recorded as being in the Gore District, looking at the associated marriages it's probable that the wedding took place in Dumfries Township. That's little better than a guess. Where clergyman Robert Lindsay was located at the time has not been found. |
| Death | He died on 4 January 1901 at Ingersoll, Oxford, Co., Ontario, at age 85. |
| Burial | He was buried at Ingersoll Rural Cemetery. |
| Note | Death reg. 021292-01 Ingersoll, Oxford County John Brown died Jan 4, 1901. Age 86. Residence Inkerman Street. Gentleman. Born Scotland. Presbyterian. Informant's name illegible. A Willie Brown appears with the family in the 1881 census. He is age 5 and unlikely to be a son of John and Agnes. At a guess, he is a grandson. He appears with his grandfather John, by then a widower, in the 1891 census. This time, William as he is shown, is clearly identified as a grandson. Also present are grandsons George, age 8, and Charles, age 6. John in 1891 is shown as age 76. With him are daughters Mary Ann and Isabella as well as son James who is a cheesemaker. |
