The stone in section 2, Mountview Cemetery in Galt shows that John Mattison Leece died in 1847 at age 75. This would suggest he was born in 1772. A Christening record has been found, however, for John Mattinson Leese and is dated 26 November 1769 at Preston Patrick, Westmorland, England. It is quite possible that there was an earlier birth of a child given the name of John Mattison Leece and who didn't survive and so the name was used again for a later child. It seems more likely, however, that 1769 was the correct birth year for John Mattison Leece.

(Mountview was originally the Galt Cemetery. It was established in July of 1868. It was not named Mountview until 1886. When the First Church cemetery at High Park, also known as the old Strang Burying Ground, was closed in 1889, many bodies and monuments were moved to Mountview.)

We do not yet know the maiden name of John's wife Margaret. Both were originally buried in First Church Cemetery, High Park, Galt, their remains eventually being moved to Mountview. The stone for John and Margaret is a large granite stone and was perhaps erected at the time of the death of their son John Jr. The Leece plot at Mountview is next to the Buchanan plot.

The 1837 letter to John Leece (which is in the possession of your researcher) from a lawyer in Kendal, England, regarding the estate of Edward Mattison, was originally interpreted as being to John Leece the younger. A careful re-reading of the affidavit portion, however, suggests that it was addressed to John Mattison Leece and that his parents were, per the letter, John Leece and Elizabeth Mattison.
