A family chart dates the marriage of Alexander Buchanan and Mary Wilcox to March 18, 1857. Marriage records for this era are difficult to find. The chart states that they were married by Rev. Dr. Smith, Baptist Minister of St. George. The place of marriage is not given.

Beyond this, we have the following from the Christian Messenger:

Edition of March 26, 1857
Buchanan-Wilcox-On 18 March by Rev. William Smith, Alexander Buchanan of North Dumfries, Waterloo Co., to Mary Wilcox, South Dumfries, Brant Co.

Refer Christian Messenger, Births - Deaths - Marriages, Volume 1, November 1854 - July 1857, Hamilton Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society, 2001.

The transcription of these records begins with the statement that the Christian Messenger was published at Brantford.

Alexander Buchanan died May 26, 1914, at lot 4, concession 7, North Dumfries Tp. This also his residence. Age 83. Widower. Farmer. Parents William Buchanan and Jane Griffith. Physician Dr. A. B. Smillie of Sheffield. Informant W. H. Buchanan, Branchton.

At the time of the 1901 census, Alexander appears to have in his home an adopted daughter by the name of Myrtle Cooper, born in England. The entry isn't clear for this, but appears to be the case. A Myrtle Cooper, maid in Galt, married a Fenton Abelson in 1910. By the time of the 1911 census, the Abelsons are living in Preston. They have a daughter Dorothy who is less than a year in age.

Alexander's will, #6163, appears on MS1608. It was probated in Waterloo County. His executor was William Herbert Buchanan.

At the time of the 1861 census Alexander and Mary are in Bosanquet Township in Lambton County. There is a column for deaths in the previous twelve months and there are two children shown, but the entries are crossed out. The children are not named, but this does tend to confirm the family record mentioned of two children who died in November of 1860.

Decades ago, this researcher was presented with a family chart with names, dates, and some marriage information for descendants of Alexander Buchanan and Mary Wilcox. This includes dates of births and deaths for their two earliest children, both of whome died within days of each other in 1860. Information on the chart has the look of being extracted from a family bible. Dates of birth and death for Annetta Jane and William Rufus are taken from this chart, but places of burial for the children have not been found.
