Lysander S. Bradish

ID # 4369, (1818-)
BaptismLysander S. Bradish was baptized in 1818 at New York State.
MarriageHe married Christiana Buchanan, daughter of John Buchanan and Margaret McArthur, on 12 July 1860 at Kent County, Michigan.
The Kent County, Michigan, Dibean Marriage Index, provided by Jack and Marianna Dibean, shows the following:

Bradshan, Lysander S.
Bradshan, Buchanan, Christiana
12 July 1860

The transcription shows Lysander with the surname Bradshan. Unquestionably, going by Christianna's name in the 1871 census at Galt, plus the name on her gravestone at Mountview Cemetery and her obituary, Lysander's name was Bradish.

The following is as it appears in Kent County Court House records. It has the advantage of showing the witnesses. The spelling of Lysander's name is shown as interpreted by both transcribers.

Bradshan, Lysander S. (w) 43, Grand Rapids and Christiana Buchanan (w) 35, same place. 12 July 1860 at Grand Rapids by C. Smith. G. W. Dickinson, and L. R. Dickinson, both of Grand Rapids, witnesses.

Considering the 1860 census at Grand Rapids and Christianna's stone in Mountview Cemetery in Galt, Bradish is correct.

According to the 1860 census at Grand Rapids, Lysander Bradish worked as a farm laborer at the farm of George Dickinson and his wife Louisa. Their being present as witnesses may have been a gesture of friendship, or they may have been related to Lysander. There is no evidence for a blood relationship, however.

NoteWe do not know what became of Lysander Bradish. Christiana married him in Kent County in 1860 and by 1871 she is back in Galt. The census does show her as married, but a sure record for Lysander has not been found beyond their marriage record.
