Melinda and Melvina Culham were sisters. Melvina mentions Desdemona Stewart in her will as her niece. It is also evident that Desdemona, from the associated inscriptions on her stone at Mountview, must have spent at least the early days of her life with the family of her aunt, Mary Jane Culham, wife of Alexander Scott. Mary Jane died in 1875, but her husband Alexander K. Scott lived until 1924. The inscription reads:
