No sure record has been found of Alexander Burnet, son of Andrew and Isabel, settling in Dumfries Township or Galt. An Alexander Burnett is recorded as emigrating to the United States from Scotland. It is said he only remained there a few months and then moved on to Canada and settled in Galt. According to James Young's history, this was only a little prior to the spring of 1834 and the cholera epidemic. Young's work includes a portrait of this Alex Burnett - see page 98. Young quotes a letter that Alex wrote at the end of the epidemic, a graphic description of the sad effect on the town. In it, he bemoans his single state. It is possible, however, this just means that he is a widower.

An Alexander Burnett, age 50, does appear in the 1851 census. He is shown as a shoemaker. His wife, 44, is just shown as Mrs. Burnett, born in Scotland. Their oldest son William, age 16, and the rest of the children are all shown as being born in Canada. William's age suggests that he was born after the 1834 cholera epidemic, but this record has sufficient in the way of problems that we have no certainty that he is Alexander, son of Andrew and Isabel. Alexander does not appear in First Church marriage records and they have no children shown as being baptized between 1834 and 1838 or in such later years as are on hand.

Alexander Burnett, shoemaker, in North Dumfries in the 1851 census (really, taken in January of 1852) has a son Samuel who will be age 11 as of his next birthday. He is not the much older Samuel Burnett who died in 1897 at age 80, a native of Abedeenshire, and who is buried in Winterbourne Presbyterian Cemetery in Woolwich Township of Waterloo County.
