Home District Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Robert Corson, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada. Received on the 21st and registered on the 24th of July, 1835.

Jesse Jones of King Township and Harriet Egan of Whitchurch Township, were married on Oct. 15th, 1834, after the publication of banns.
Witnesses Matthew Love and Isaac Vanhorn.

As with many district marriages, the exact place of marriage is not given. Jesse's obituary, however, locates the marriage in King Township. See notes under Jesse.

The majority of the residences of couples in the record are in townships located north of Toronto in what is now York County.

Robert Corson appears elsewhere in this tree. He is the son of Daniel Corson and Rebecca Lawrason. A history of Robert appears in the book Father Corson by Rev. John Carroll, Toronto, 1879, and tells us that he served the church on the Yonge Street Circuit. He may have resided at Richmond Hill, but he will have visited local congregations on horseback.

DeathHe died on 7 July 1890 at Village of Doon, Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co., at age 80.
BurialHe was buried at Section 3, Mountview Cemetery, Galt.
NoteThe 1851 census, when taken in Peel Township in Wellington County, has the pages mixed up so far as the Jones family is concerned. Jesse and Harriet and their first three children appear on page 53. The remaining children, beginning with Seneca, appear on page 21. The list of children shown begins with this census

A death registration for Jesse Jones has not been found. See Vol. 10, Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1884-1890, Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2011, page 231, for which the following is abbreviated.

The obituary tells that Jesse was born in Whitchurch Township in 1809. He is said to have spent his youth in or near Toronto and then moved to King Township at age 23. He is said to have been 25 when he married Harriet Egan. He was later in Wellington County and then, finally, in the village of Doon, now a part of the city of Kitchener, where he died on July 7th, 1890, after accidently falling downstairs. The oituary lists several children, including Seneca Jones and Mrs. Dr. Cameron of Galt.

Jesse's date of death, as it appears on his gravestone in section 3 of Mountview Cemetery, agrees with the Guardian obituary. His date of birth appears on his gravestone.
