John's birth registration is very early. The requirement only came into effect the 1st of July of 1869.

John Ruby and Annie Moffat were married in Fergus in 1893. By the time of the 1901 census, John is a widower. His mother, Catherine, and a sister and brother, Ada and Oswald, are with him. His mother Catherine is shown as housekeeper and his sister and brother are shown as daughter and son. This is made clearer at the time of the 1906 census, again in Winnipeg, where Catherine is shown as his mother and Ada and Oswald are shown as sister and brother.

No evidence has been found that John and Annie had children.
