| Note | The baptism of William B. Defoe, son of James and Joanna, is to be found recorded on page 327, 'Township' (Town) of Galt. His date of birth is recorded as being 26 July, 1858, in Greenbank. His parents place of residence is said to be Greenbank. This is in Reach Township, Ontario. At first glance, his place of baptism is faded and unreadable. Comparing, however, with one or two entries on previous pages, it's safe to say that the faded entry is for North Dumfries Township. It's evident from the entries that his baptism was that of an adult. He was baptized by Rev. Alfred Cunningham, who was clergyman at the Ainslie Street (Wesleyan) Methodist Church in Galt. Since he was baptized in the township, it would appear that the baptism was a family affair. (A list of Wesleyan Methodist clergy at Ainslie Street Methodist is to be found in the church publication Wesley United Church, Cambridge, Ontario, 1854-1879.) William and Sarah are in Galt as of the 1891 census. With them are three children, James 7, Guy 4, and Myrtle 1. William and Sarah are in Carnduff in the Assinaboia East District, later Saskatchewan, at the time of the 1901 census. Since the birth information for the entire family places them in Ontario, it would appear that their emigration to Saskatchewan was recent at the time of the census. The birth information for the family is from the 1901 census at Carnduff. William and Sarah with their children are in Saskatchewan, apparently at Carnduff, at the time of the 1906, 1911, 1916, and 1921 censuses. Information for the year of death is indexed on Find-a-Grave and locates the burial of William And Sarah in Carnduff Cemetery. |
