| Note | In 1992, Norma Huber of the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society prepared a one page PDF of gravestones found that had originally been in the High Park Cemetery, also known as the Strang Cemetery, essentially the cemetery of First Church, believed to be the oldest cemetery in Galt. Reference is made to abandoned stones being found when the foundation to an apartment building was dug and that many of these were carted away. She tells that in 1985, a request was made by the Cambridge Reporter asking for information about these missing stones, but she tells that few were found. Norma lists 8 stones that were found and one of them was found on Arthur White Avenue in a retaining wall. Norma transcribed it as follows: To the memory of Jane Moscrip born July 16, 1815 and died Feb. 13, 1840, aged 24 years, 6 months, and 27 days. The date of death for Jane on this stone agrees with the stone in section 4 in Mountview Cemetery that commemorates her, her sister Mary Douglas Moscrip, and her parents. The date of her birth does not appear on the Mountview stone. The cemetery office does not show burials for Jane or her sister Mary Douglas, or her parents. This does not preclude the possibility that the remains were moved to Mountview in the mid 1880s at the time of the 'dig' at High Park, but, barring a news article, we just don't know. |
