| Note | For the following, refer the Dumfries Reformer edition of February 24, 1869. This is found on microfilm N175 reel 6. It is an unhappy story which relates the death of John Milroy Sr. of 'East Dumfries'. It tells how he was driving horses which were pulling a sleigh outfitted for hauling lumber or cordwood. There were stakes at each corner of the sleigh. Apparently, John was on concession 10 in Beverly, about two miles from Kirkwall, when the horses bolted. With the sleigh upsetting, one of the stakes pierced his back. The horses were caught and a Mr. David McCormack worked back and found Mr. Milroy. He was conveyed to the McCormack home and Dr. Lundy sent for, but John Milroy died of blood loss. The article does not date his death, but the date does appear on his gravestone in Mountview Cemetery. Mountview, at the time known as Galt Cemetery, was only just opened within the previous year, so John was an early burial in this cemetery. The newspaper account tells how John Milroy was born on a farm named Tibbert, near Stranraer, in Scotland, and that it had been in the family since the 1500s. John Milroy came to Dumfries in Upper Canada in 1827, according to the story, and lived ever since on the land he had purchased. Considering the places of birth for the first two Milroy so far found, this is probably accurate or close to being so. Along with the newspaper account relating the death of John Milroy, we have a bit more to work with. Norma Huber, via the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 2001, assembled Funeral Notice Cards of Waterloo County From 1851 to 1980. Page 48 of this publication tells of the death of John Milroy Sr. on February 19, 1869, at the residence of Mr. McCormack on the 10th concession of Beverly as the result of an accident. The funeral was to take place on Monday the 22nd at John's residence on the 10th concession of Dumfries (North Dumfries). From there, the funeral party would go to the 'Eastern' Cemetery in Galt. Was he for some reason first buried in The First Church Cemetery at High Park (now Centennial Park) overlooking Galt from the east side? If so, then he was later buried in the Galt Cemetery, renamed Mountview in the mid 1880s, as were numbers of others who had been buried in First. Certainly, his gravestone is now recorded as being in Mountview's Section 2. (At the time, the First Church Cemetery was on the east side of Galt; Mountview is on Galt's west side.) Note that the ages of the children as computed from census information does not always agree with information found inscribed on their gravestones. |
